On 27 December 2025, the Egyptian MoFA issued a statement condemning Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, characterizing it as a flagrant violation of the obligation to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States, as enshrine in the UN Charter. In that statement, Egypt affirmed its rejection of secession through illegitimate and unlawful means and stated that such actions contribute to destabilization in the Horn of Africa.

This position was subsequently reiterated in a joint statement issued by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt, the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, the Union of the Comoros, the Republic of Djibouti, the Republic of The Gambia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Republic of Iraq, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the State of Kuwait, the State of Libya, the Republic of Maldives, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Sultanate of Oman, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the State of Palestine, the State of Qatar, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Federal Republic of Somalia, the Republic of the Sudan, the Republic of Türkiye, the Republic of Yemen, the Republic of Indonesia, and Malaysia, together with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Gulf Cooperation, reaffirming the same obligations under international law and stating that unilateral recognition of parts of States threatens international peace and security.

Egypt restated its position during the United Nations Security Council emergency meeting on Somaliland held on 29 December 2025.

For historical context, Somaliland declared independence from Somalia on 17 May 1991.
