On 24 February 2026, during the emergency meeting of the United Nations General Assembly concerning the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Egypt voted in favor of Resolution A/RES/ES-11/10 titled “Support for Lasting Peace in Ukraine” based on draft resolution A/ES-11/L.17 sponsored by Ukraine. In explanation of the vote, Egypt’s UN representative highlighted the global repercussions of the conflict, particularly on developing countries and African states, including disruptions to food security, supply chains, and energy prices. He also highlighted Egypt’s participation in several diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending the conflict, including the Arab Contact Group in June 2022, the African Leaders Initiative in July 2023, and the core group of the Friends of Peace in September 2024.
Egypt’s UN representative emphasized that Egypt’s vote reflects a number of principles applied to all conflicts regardless of their conflicts and geographical location, including:
- The need to uphold the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter without selectivity, stressing dialogue, the peaceful settlement of disputes and the right of people to self-determination.
- The importance of addressing the root causes of crisis and the legitimate security concerns of states, while respecting the linguistic and cultural rights of populations affected by the conflict.
- The need to maintain effective diplomatic channels and refrain from measures that may fuel the conflict and deepen polarization, including the use of economic sanctions.
