In the context of the assaults on the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Damascus (Syria), alongside the attack on the consulate of the State of Kuwait in Basra (Iraq), Egypt issued two statements on 5 and 8 April condemning those acts as violations of the inviolability of diplomatic and consular missions.
The statements underscored the necessity of compliance with the provisions of international law, particularly with regard to obligations to protect and secure diplomatic and consular missions, their premises, and personnel, in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961 and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations of 1963. Egypt also emphasized the importance of adopting the necessary measures to hold those responsible for the attack liable.
