Egypt Signs the Singapore Convention on Mediation

On 13 January 2026, Egypt signed the United Nations Convention on International Settlement Agreements Resulting from Mediation at the Headquarters (HQ) in New York, becoming the 59th signatory.

Also known as the Singapore Convention on Mediation (SCM) (2018), the Convention aims to provide a framework for the recognition and enforcement of settlement agreements resulting from mediation in international commercial disputes.  SCM was adopted by the UN General Assembly on 20 December 2018 under Resolution 73/198. According to Article 11(1), the Convention is open for signature to all states in Singapore on 7 August 2019, and thereafter at the UN HQ in New York. 

SCM entered into force on 12 September 2020, in accordance with article 14(1) that stipulates that it will enter into force 6 months after the deposit of the 3rd instrument of ratification, acceptance, approval, or accession. At the time of writing, it has 60 signatories, of which 22 are parties to it.
