Egypt Co-Sponsors Draft Resolution on Respect for Cultural Diversity, with Particular Emphasis on the Cultural Rights of Persons with Disabilities

On 30 March 2026, during the 52nd meeting held at the UN Human Rights Council, draft resolution A/HRC/61/L.12 concerning the “Promotion of the enjoyment of the cultural rights of everyone and respect for cultural diversity” was introduced.
Egypt emphasized the importance of such resolution in reaffirming that cultural rights constitute an integral part of the universal, interrelated, and interdependent human rights. Egypt underscored that respect for cultural diversity remains a key driver of dialogue, mutual understanding, and peaceful coexistence among peoples and societies.
Egypt further emphasized its position as a proud traditional co-sponsor of the draft resolution, reflecting its continued support for initiatives aimed at advancing cultural rights and strengthening respect for diversity.
Moreover, Egypt welcomed the inclusion of new language in the draft resolution addressing the cultural rights of persons with disabilities. The statement highlighted the importance of reaffirming their equal participation in cultural life while drawing attention to the barriers that continue to hinder the full realization of these rights.
According to Egypt, the balanced outcome reflected in the draft resolution reinforces the Human Rights Council’s shared commitment to advancing cultural diversity as a bridge for dialogue and mutual understanding, particularly at a time marked by growing divisions across the international community. In light of these considerations, Egypt called upon the Council to support the draft resolution and to adopt it by consensus.
The resolution was subsequently adopted without a vote.
