Following Israel’s announcement of appointing a Diplomatic Representative in the entity referred to as “Somaliland”, Egypt issued a joint statement on the 18 April 2026 alongside the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Somalia, Sudan, Libya, Bangladesh, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Türkiye, Indonesia, Pakistan, Kuwait, Mauritania, Jordan, Oman, Lebanon, Qatar and Yemen expressing their strongest denunciation of this decision. The Ministers considered this step to constitute a flagrant violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia and amounts to a serious breach of the principles of international law, including the Charter of the United Nations and the Constitutive Act of the African Union.

The Ministers reaffirmed their categorical opposition to any unilateral actions that may infringe upon the unity and sovereignty of states and stressed that such acts establish a dangerous precedent that may jeopardize stability in the Horn of Africa and adversely affect regional peace and security.

For contextual background, Israel recognized the so-called state of “Somaliland” in December 2025. For Egypt’s reaction to this decision, see here.
